Lincoln, NE (Sports Network) - Darren Evans rushed for 72 yards and two touchdowns as the Virginia Tech Hokies slipped past the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 35-30, in a non-league affair at Memorial Stadium.
Quarterback Tyrod Taylor led the way for Virginia Tech (4-1) on the ground, as the signal caller rumbled for 87 yards and one score. Taylor also threw for 171 yards in the win on 9-of-15 passing.
Joe Ganz was the main source of production for Nebraska (3-1), as the quarterback threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns on 17-of-26 passing.
The Hokies blocked a punt midway through the first half that went for a safety, giving Virginia Tech an early 2-0 lead.
The lead was pushed to 9-0 when Evans plunged into the end zone from one yard out.
Less than two minutes later the Cornhuskers finally got on the scoreboard with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Ganz to Mike McNeill.
Seconds into the second stanza, the Hokies pushed their lead to 12-7 with a 19-yard field goal by Dustin Keys.
Nebraska answered back with a field goal of its own, as Alex Henry nailed a 48-yard kick.
Virginia Tech closed out the first half with a 38 and 27 yard field goal by Keys, giving the Hokies an 18-10 edge at the break.
Keys continued to showcase his kicking abilities in the third quarter when he connected on a 36-yard field goal.
The Hokies lead was pushed to 28-10 when Evans scampered into the end zone on a 19-yard run midway through the third frame.
With just seconds remaining in the third quarter, Roy Helu Jr. scored on a 12- yard run for Nebraska.
Midway through the final frame the Huskers cut their deficit to 28-23 with an outstanding 88-yard punt return by Nate Swift.
With a little over two minutes left in the contest the Hokies extended their advantage to 35-23 with a two-run TD run by Taylor.
A 17-yard pass from Ganz to Todd Peterson brought the score to 35-30, but the Cornhuskers would come no closer, as Virginia Tech was able to hold on for the victory.
