Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Cedric Peerman rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns, as the Virginia Cavaliers defeated the East Carolina Pirates, 35-20, in a non-league affair at Scott Stadium.
Marc Verica threw for 216 yards and a touchdown on an efficient 25-of-32 pass attempts for Virginia (3-3), although he was picked off twice. Kevin Ogletree had four receptions for 65 yards and a score, as the Cavs won their second consecutive outing.
Jonathan Williams guided ECU (3-3) in the loss with 95 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Patrick Pinkney completed 12-of-28 tosses for 196 yards and a touchdown, while Dwayne Harris snared six of those tosses for 128 yards. The Pirates have now dropped their last three games following a 3-0 start that included a pair of wins over Top 25 opponents.
ECU took a 6-0 lead behind a pair of field goals by Ben Hartman in the opening quarter. He connected on a 45-yard kick early in the frame and a 35-yard boot late in the period.
Virginia, however, was able to strike on the last play of the first quarter, as Peerman took off for a 79-yard touchdown run.
Peerman struck again early in the second quarter, only this touchdown run came from 60 yards away.
The Cavs added to their lead late in the quarter, as Mikell Simpson rumbled five yards to paydirt.
With just over a minute left before the intermission, Verica threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Ogletree to give Virginia a 28-6 lead at the half.
ECU made it a 28-13 game just over five minutes into the third quarter, as Williams plunged one yard for a touchdown.
The Pirates struck again early in the fourth quarter with a 10-yard touchdown toss from Pinkney to Brandon Simmons.
Virginia, however, had an answer and pushed its lead to 35-20 courtesy of a Scott Deke 12-yard touchdown pass to John Phillips midway through the final period.
As a team, the Cavs gained 202 on the ground in the game, while the Pirates managed just 89 rushing yards. Virginia's defense also got involved by forcing a pair of turnovers and recording six sacks.
