NCAA Game Summary - Boston College at Florida State

(Saturday, November 15th)

Final Score: Boston College 27, (20) Florida State 17

Tallahassee, FL (Sports Network) - Montel Harris ran for 121 yards and one touchdown on 25 carries, as Boston College notched a 27-17 win over 20th- ranked Florida State.

Marcellus Bowman returned an interception 87 yards for a touchdown for the Golden Eagles (7-3, 3-3 ACC), who have won two in a row. Chris Crane threw for 181 yards and one TD on 14-of-26 passing, with one interception, in the win for BC.

If Boston College goes on to defeat Wake Forest and Maryland -- the school's final two opponents of the season -- it will represent the Atlantic Division in the ACC Championship game for the second-straight season.

Christian Ponder threw for 183 yards on 15-of-31 completions for Florida State (7-3, 4-3), but was intercepted three times. He also ran for a touchdown.

The Seminoles were without five players -- all wide receivers -- who head coach Bobby Bowden suspended on Friday for their apparent involvement in an on-campus fight earlier this week.

"It had nothing to do with the loss," Ponder said. "We missed key guys, but every week we have missed guys. We just didn't do enough."

Boston College used several long drives to control the game, and held the ball for 38:07 of the game clock.

"What you would have thought would have happened finally happened, and that's what we got, whipped up front very thoroughly," Bowden said. "Offensively and defensively, just got whipped up front...The quarterback didn't have time to set and they had the ball the whole dadgum football game."

Boston College got the early edge, scoring on the game's opening drive. On the game's opening play, in fact, Harris broke out for 47 yards down to the FSU 22. The Eagles worked their way to the 14-yard line before Crane found Rich Gunnell wide open in the back of the end zone on the left side. Crane was hit as he threw, but managed a perfect pass to put BC up 7-0.

After a series of punts, Florida State took the ball with just over five minutes left in the first quarter at the BC 47. The Seminoles reached the BC 18 before Ponder, facing 2nd-and-13, tried a short pass to the right side.

The Boston College linebacker had crept in, leaving room for the safety Bowman to step up. Bowman did just that, jumped the pass and ran 87 yards downfield for the score, giving the Eagles a 14-0 lead with 1:04 left in the stanza.

But Florida State got on the board shortly into the second quarter. Ponder's pass to Rod Owens went for 30 yards down to the BC 12. FSU attained 1st-and- goal on the next rush, and on second down Ponder plowed four yards into the end zone, bringing the Seminoles within a score.

Florida State added a 39-yard field goal from Graham Gano with 25 ticks left on the clock, and went into halftime down just 14-10.

In the third quarter, Boston College used up 14 plays and more than 6 1/2 minutes of the clock to notch a 19-yard field goal from Steve Aponavicius. The score came with a little more than five minutes left in the stanza, and BC added another TD late in the quarter.

Crane completed a pass to Josh Haden in the right flat, and the running back sprinted up the right sideline, past four FSU defenders. He was tackled, but not before the 57-yard gain set BC up at the six-yard line.

Boston College got a fresh set of downs at the two-yard line thanks to a pass interference, and on second down Harris plunged two yards across the goal line for a 24-10 lead with 48 ticks left in the third.

Florida State, though, quickly countered with its own TD. Wide receiver Preston Parker aired out a 29-yard strike to Carr for a score just nine seconds into the fourth.

But after each quarterback was intercepted once, Boston College took possession at its own 20 with more than nine minutes left. The Eagles embarked on an epic time-draining drive, using 16 plays and 8:55 of the clock.

"It was the first time where the offensive line got a chance to take the game over," Boston College head coach Jeff Jagodzinski said. "We've been asking them to do that all season and they finally started coming off the ball well."

It ended in a 30-yard field goal by Aponavicius for a 10-point BC lead with 20 ticks left, all but sealing the game.
