Greensboro, NC (Sports Network) - Olivier Hanlan buried eight 3-pointers en route to a freshman Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament record 41 points, as Boston College defeated Georgia Tech, 84-64, in a first-round matchup on Thursday at Greensboro Coliseum.
Hanlan, fresh off being named ACC Freshman of the Year on Tuesday, shot 14- of-18 from the field and knocked down his final 12 shots to help the Eagles (16-16) earn their fourth straight victory.
Joe Rahon added 15 points and Ryan Anderson chipped in 11 for Boston College, which will take on top-seeded Miami-Florida in a quarterfinal matchup on Friday.
Marcus Georges-Hunt paced Georgia Tech (16-15) with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Mfon Udofia followed with 10 points for the Yellow Jackets, who were coming off a 74-72 setback at Boston College on March 9.
Georgia Tech opened the contest on a 15-0 outburst and held a 28-14 lead with just over seven minutes left in the first half before Hanlan took over, as the sensational freshman scored 17 points over the final seven minutes of the half to help the Eagles close the frame on a 24-5 surge and take a 38-33 cushion into the break.
Daniel Miller opened the second stanza with a layup to bring Georgia Tech within three, but Hanlan scored eight of Boston College's next 11 points to push the margin to 49-37 with 16:15 left.
Georgia Tech got as close as eight with just over 13 minutes to play before Hanlan nailed a triple to spark a 12-3 BC run which gave the Eagles a double- digit cushion for good.
