Final Score: Montana 86, Southern Utah 74 (OT)
Cedar City, UT (Sports Network) - Kareem Jamar scored 26 points, leading four starters in double figures, as the Montana Grizzlies grabbed an 86-74 overtime victory against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds in Big Sky Conference action at Centrum Arena.
Jamar finished the night shooting 7-of-14 from the floor and a near-perfect 12-of-13 at the free-throw line for the Grizzlies (21-6, 17-1 Big Sky) as they won for the third time in the last four outings. Spencer Coleman pitched in with 16 points, Jordan Gregory 14 and Keron DeShields 13 points for the visitors as they remained all alone atop the conference standings.
The Thunderbirds (11-17, 8-10) were led by Damon Heuir who tallied a game-high 29 points, converting 10-of-20 from the floor including 4-of-8 behind the 3- point line. Jackson Stevenett and A.J. Hess accounted for 16 and 15 points, respectively, adding seven rebounds apiece as the team bowed for the fifth time in six games.
The teams traded leads several times throughout the first half, but a late spurt by Montana put the visitors up by a score of 37-32 at the break. The Grizzlies made good on just 2-of-7 shots beyond the arc over the first 20 minutes of action, but connected on a perfect 9-of-9 at the charity stripe.
Montana led for the majority of the second half, until a 10-2 run by Southern Utah provided the hosts with a 65-62 edge with just under two minutes remaining in regulation. Trailing by three late, Gregory knocked down a 3- pointer for the visitors to knot the score at 67-67 and send the meeting into overtime.
In the extra session the Grizzlies scored the first points and never looked back, hitting all three of their field goal attempts and feasting at the charity stripe (13-of-14) as they pulled away for the double-digit win.
Not only did Montana convert 50 percent from the floor on the night, the team also missed just three shots at the free-throw line, outscoring SUU in that department by a 31-10 margin.
