GAME NOTES: The Indiana State Sycamores look to stay in the race for first place as they venture to JQH Arena for a Missouri Valley Conference tilt against the Missouri State Bears.

Indiana State picked up its fourth win in five games on Saturday as it clipped Southern Illinois, 66-65, at home to improve to 9-4 in the MVC standings. The Sycamores have defeated Wichita State and Creighton by double-digit margins during that span. In addition to the wins over their formerly nationally ranked MVC foes, the Sycamores are also one of the few teams to down Miami- Florida this season. Now in a tie for first with the Shockers and Bluejays, coach Greg Lansing and his squad have pressure to improve upon a 4-6 mark in true road tests.

Missouri State is returning home after a tough two-game road swing in which it was handed setbacks by Northern Iowa (48-37) and Wichita State (79-50). The pair of losses dropped the Bears to 5-8 in league play, but they have a little more confidence at home where they are 6-6 on the campaign.

Missouri State owns a 37-22 lead in the all-time series against Indiana State, but the Sycamores have won seven of the last 10 meetings, including each of the last three. Indiana State is 5-22 all-time at Missouri State, but are 2-2 inside the JQH Arena. Indiana State recorded a 68-60 win over Missouri State on Jan. 16.

Jake Odum continued his sensational play for ISU over the weekend as he tallied 13 points and knocked down the deciding shot with 19 seconds remaining to lift the team over the Salukis. RJ Mahurin also played a big role by draining 5- of-7 from 3-point range en route to 16 points. Odum is pacing the Sycamores with 14.2 points, 4.4 assists, and 1.6 steals per tilt while Manny Arop chimes in with 12.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. In conference action, ISU has been impressive on both ends of the floor with the fourth best scoring offense (68.1) and third-best scoring defense (64.2).

Marcus Marshall was the only player for Missouri State to score in double figures against Wichita State, tallying a career-high 19 points on 6-of-10 from the field. The Bears were outrebounded, 47-22, as they finished 16-for-51 (.314) from the field and 6-of-19 (.316) from distance. The Shockers, who snapped a three-game losing streak, shot 29-for-59 from the field and 9-for-20 (.450) from beyond the arc to hand the Bears their worst defeat of the season. Anthony Downing, who leads MSU in scoring at 13.8 ppg, was held to nine points for the fourth consecutive game in the loss.

Indiana State has caught fire at the perfect time to thrust itself into contention for the MVC regular-season title. The Bears are far from the top at this point. Their loss to a struggling Shockers team is not a good sign as they head into their bout with the red-hot Sycamores.
