GAME NOTES: In a Colonial Athletic Association showdown at the GSU Sports Arena, the Georgia State Panthers will take on the Towson Tigers on Saturday afternoon.
Towson is coming off an 85-6 rout of Delaware. It was the third win in a row for the Tigers who had lost three consecutive games before the streak. It was also the second straight game that Towson reached the 80-point plateau, as the team is starting to heat up down the stretch.
Georgia State's last time out ended in defeat, as the Panthers lost to UNC Wilmington, 76-72. The Panthers had won two games prior to that and have won six of their last eight outings overall. After starting off 1-3 in league play the squad is now a solid 7-5.
The Panthers lead the all-time series 9-6 and took the last meeting 71-69 just a few weeks ago in Towson on Jan. 21.
In the win over Delaware, Jerrelle Benimon posted a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while also leading the team with five assists and two blocks. Jerome Hairston (17 points), Marcus Damas (16 points, eight rebounds), Mike Burwell (12 points, six rebounds), and Bilal Dixon (13 rebounds) all added significant performances, while as a team, Towson held the Blue Hens to just 28.8 percent shooting from the field. Benimon is clearly the key player for the Tigers, averaging a double-double of 17.2 ppg and 11.5 rpg, while shooting 53.4 percent from the floor. Damas is the only other player averaging double-figure scoring on the season with 10.5 ppg. In conference play Hairston, Burwell, and Rafriel Guthrie are consistently adding double-figure scoring performances.
R.J. Hunter was 6-of-7 from 3-point range, scoring 26 points in the loss to UNCW, marking his third consecutive game with 25+ points. Hunter also recorded five steals, while Devonta White added 19 points, 16 of which came in a second half effort. Hunter is on the hunt for the Colonial Athletic Association's Rookie of the Year honors and is doing so with stellar numbers, leading the Panthers in scoring with 17.7 ppg and shooting just over 45.0 percent from the field overall and just under 40.0 percent from 3-point range. Hunter is just one of five freshmen in the nation currently averaging 17.0+ ppg and 5.0+ rpg. White adds 14.2 ppg, while Manny Atkins scores 13.8 ppg and grabs 6.3 rpg. He is currently the CAA leader in 3-point shooting percentage at 41.9.
Hunter has caught fire as of late and will look to continue that success even against the solid defense of the Tigers. The Panthers will need all their weapons to be on to get the win and move up in the CAA standings.
