GAME NOTES: The Bowling Green Falcons and IUPUI Jaguars will try to leave Ann Arbor, Michigan with a victory as they square off in the second round of the 2012 NIT Season Tip-Off.
This bout marks the first meeting between these two teams on the hardwood.
Bowling Green overcame a pair of eight-point deficits and led for most of the second half, but could not hang on and dropped a 79-73 decision in overtime to Cleveland State in the first round of this early-season tournament. The Falcons are now 1-1 as they took down Lake Erie, 63-53, in their season opener with a strong defensive effort.
The Jaguars began their season with a 67-54 victory over Utah Valley at home last Friday, but the good feelings were short-lived as they were defeated on Monday night by No. 5 Michigan, 91-54. IUPUI finished the 2011-12 season at 14-18 overall and 7-11 in Summit League action under Todd Howard, who is now in his second season as the program's head coach. Howard's squad was completely overmatched by the Wolverines and allowed them to shoot 60 percent from the floor and win the rebounding battle, 42-23.
The Falcons rallied around their diminutive senior floor general Jordon Crawford (5-6) in their season opener. Crawford finished the game with 22 points, four assists and three steals. However, he was bottled up by Cleveland State and committed nine turnovers. While Crawford disappeared, A'uston Calhoun took over and netted a career-high 30 points while also grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. Luke Kraus added 10 points. Richaun Holmes managed to block four shots to exemplify BGSU's rough-edged style of play.
The Jaguars have a new leader on the floor as Purdue transfer John Hart was the clear go-to-guy in the team's first two games. Hart finished the game with a team-high 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting versus Utah Valley and produced 15 points to be the only IUPUI player in double figures versus Michigan. Junior center Mitchell Patton has averaged 12 points and five rebounds per game early on. Greg Rice and Donovan Gibbs both scored 10 points in the season opener, but combined to go 4-of-16 from the floor against the Wolverines.
IUPUI's lopsided loss on Monday gives it a slight advantage as many of its key players rested up once the game got out of hand. BGSU is coming off of a tiring, emotional overtime loss. The Falcons need both Calhoun and Crawford to perform well as a tandem for the first time this season.
