Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Rian Pearson contributed a double-double of 20 points and 15 rebounds to help the seventh-seeded Toledo Rockets outlast the 11th-seeded Central Michigan Chippewas and walk away with a 75-72 victory in their second round Mid-American Conference Tournament battle at Quicken Loans Arena.
Julius Brown added 18 points and five assists for Toledo (18-15), which will advance to face the No. 3 seed, Ohio, in Thursday's quarterfinal round. Reese Holliday chipped in 12 points for the Rockets, who are in search of their first MAC Tournament title since 1980.
Trey Zeigler paced CMU (11-21) with 17 points as he became the first sophomore in program history to reach 1,000 career points. Derek Jackson netted 16 points, Olivier Mbaigoto had 14 points, and Austin McBroom chipped in 13 points. Andre Coimbra grabbed a team-high 10 boards in the season-ending loss.
The Rockets took a 35-31 lead into the intermission after they shot 40.7 percent from the floor and knocked down 9-of-11 attempts at the charity stripe in the opening period. CMU made 40 percent of its field goal attempts, but just 3-of-11 from beyond the arc in the first half.
The Chippewas fell behind by a double-digit margin after the break they shot 35.1 percent from the field in the second half. Toledo built upon its first period lead by connecting on 50 percent of its attempts from the floor in the final 20 minutes. CMU trailed by 15 points with 7:10 remaining before it attempted a late rally to salvage its season. McBroom drilled a three-pointer with six seconds left that shrunk Toledo's lead to 73-72. Dominique Buckley made two clutch free throws for the Rockets to push their lead back up to three points, and Toledo held on for the win after McBroom missed a game-tying attempt from distance as the final buzzer sounded.
CMU did not take full advantage of its time on the free throw line, as it converted only 15-of-25 from the charity stripe in the contest. The Rockets made 23 of their 30 free throw attempts and also 6-of-12 from beyond the arc to power their victory.
