NCAA Game Summary - Portland State vs. Weber State
(Tuesday, March 6)
Final Score: Weber State 69, Portland State 63
Missoula, MT (Sports Network) - Damian Lillard scored a team-high 22 points as the nation's second-leading scorer helped guide Weber State to a 69-63 win over Portland State in the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference Tournament at Dahlberg Arena.
Lillard converted 9-of-10 shots at the free-throw line and also accounted for four assists and tied a career-high with four steals, as he and the second- seeded Wildcats (24-5) advanced to the title game of the tournament where they will meet the top-seeded Montana Grizzlies on Wednesday night for the right to represent the Big Sky in the NCAA Tournament.
Also scoring in double figures for the Wildcats were Gelaun Wheelwright and Kyle Tresnak with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
The third-seeded Vikings (17-14) were paced by Charles Odum who delivered a game-high 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field, while Chehales Tapscott registered a double-double with 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in the setback.
Portland State ran out to a 7-0 lead to begin the meeting and thanks to Odum who tallied 16 points in the period, the Vikings led by five at the break, 35-30. Weber State was able to stay close thanks to 5-of-7 shooting behind the three-point line in the frame.
In the second half the PSU lead reached nine points with just over 14 minutes remaining, but the Wildcats refused to give up and used 10-of-12 shooting at the free-throw line to battle back and take the lead in the final minutes.
Portland State won the rebounding battle, 30-22, and held WSU to just five offensive boards, but 15 turnovers served to offset that effort.
