NCAA Game Summary - Duquesne at Massachusetts

Amherst, MA (Sports Network) - Chaz Williams tallied a game-high 21 points, leading five players in double figures, as Massachusetts topped Duquesne, 92-83, in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament at the Mullins Center.
Williams, who knocked down all but one of his 14 free-throw attempts, added eight rebounds and four assists for the eighth-seeded Minutemen (21-10), followed by Raphiael Putney and Javorn Farrell with 20 points apiece, the latter adding nine assists and seven rebounds off the bench as well. Terrell Vinson tacked on 11 points and Jesse Morgan 10 as UMass now heads to Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ where it will take on top-seeded and nationally- ranked Temple in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon.
The ninth-seeded Dukes (16-15) were paced by Eric Evans and Jerry Jones with 16 points apiece, the latter connecting on 4-of-6 shots from three-point range off the bench. B.J. Monteiro responded with 13 points and a team-best seven rebounds, followed by T.J. McConnell and Sean Johnson with 12 points each in the losing effort.
Both teams shot the ball very well from the field in the first half, the Minutemen hitting on 57.1 percent and the visitors 52.8 percent as the hosts held on to a 51-48 advantage at the break.
In the second half both teams fell off their lofty pace from the first 20 minutes of action, but even though UMass dropped to 41.7 percent from the floor, the team made up for it with 19-of-25 at the free-throw line in the period.
Of 70 field goal attempts, Duquesne took nearly half (33) from behind the three-point line where it was 36.4 percent accurate. The biggest difference in the meeting was at the charity stripe where the Minutemen outscored the Dukes by a 24-9 margin.
