Villanova, PA (Sports Network) - Yancy Gates shot 7-of-9 from the floor and finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, as Cincinnati claimed a 72-68 victory over the Villanova Wildcats in the regular-season finale for both teams at The Pavilion.
Dion Dixon added 14 points to help the Bearcats (22-9, 12-6 Big East) stay in the win column after knocking off eighth-ranked Marquette on Wednesday. Sean Kilpatrick and JaQuon Parker rounded out the team's double-digit scorers with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Cashmere Wright (nine points) tallied a game- high six assists and seven steals off the bench.
Maalik Wayns shot 5-of-9 from the perimeter and led all scorers with 26 points for the Wildcats (12-18, 5-13). Teammate Mouphtaou Yarou had 16 points and seven rebounds, while Dominic Cheek scored 10 in the loss.
Cincinnati shot a solid 51.6 percent from the floor in the first half to build a 40-32 halftime lead.
Trailing 47-40 with 13:24 to play in regulation, Villanova went on a 10-2 run to take a one-point lead with 11 minutes remaining. However, Dixon answered with a three-pointer moments later, and the Bearcats were able to fend off the hosts down the stretch.
Cincinnati committed only six turnovers for the game and also held a key 22-13 advantage in second-chance points.
