Reno, NV (Sports Network) - Olek Czyz led the charge with 15 points as the Nevada Wolf Pack held off the New Mexico State Aggies 65-61 at Lawlor Events Center to clinch the Western Athletic Conference regular season championship.
Malik Story tallied 14 points, six boards, and five assists for Nevada (24-5, 12-1 WAC), which has won five of six. Dario Hunt chipped in 10 points and six blocks for the Wolf Pack.
For New Mexico State (22-9, 9-4), Wendell McKines recorded a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds to pace the squad. Hernst Laroche scored 12 points and Daniel Mullings added 10 points for the Aggies, who had won their previous five games.
Nevada took a 43-36 lead into intermission by connecting on 53.3 percent of its field goals in the first half, including 7-of-9 from three-point range.
The Wolf Pack led by 11, 59-48, with 7:41 left in the game after a Czyz free- throw, but the Aggies climbed their way back in it, going on a 13-4 run to bring their deficit to just two, 63-61, with 56 seconds remaining. After Nevada missed a shot on its end, New Mexico State had one last possession to attempt to tie or take the lead, but it turned the ball over. A pair of Deonte Burton free-throws sealed the deal for Nevada.
New Mexico State shot a lowly 33.8 percent from the field in the game.
