Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Led by Aston Gibbs who finished with 19 points, the Pittsburgh Panthers defeated the St. John's Red Storm, 89-69, in a Big East Conference battle at the Petersen Events Center.
For the Panthers (16-14, 5-12 Big East), Dante Taylor finished with 17 points and eight rebounds, while J.J. Moore scored 14 points and Lamar Patterson chipped in 13 points and seven assists.
D'Angelo Harrison led the Red Storm (13-17, 6-11) with 21 points, while Phil Greene finished with 18 points and seven assists and God'sgift Achiuwa scored 17 points.
Both teams shot very well to start the contest. St. John's hit on 52 percent of its field goals, including 4-of-7 from three-point range. Pitt bettered that, connecting on 58.3 percent of its shots including 5-of-11 from beyond the arc, as they took a 38-33 lead into the break.
The second half was all Panthers, who shot a scorching 68 percent from the field, including 5-of-10 three-pointers. The Red Storm shot 48.1 percent, but only 2-of-7 from long distance. Pitt started the second half on an 11-2 run to push their advantage to double-digits. St. John's would get no closer than 12 the rest of the way, as the Panthers cruised to victory.
Pitt dominated the boards, outrebounding St. John's 31-17. Both teams finished the night shooting well from beyond the arc, with the Panthers shooting 47.6 percent (10-of-21) and the Red Storm 42.9 percent (6-of-14).
