Georgetown uses balanced attack, defense to rip 'Nova
Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Otto Porter and Jason Clark provided 15 points apiece, as ninth-ranked Georgetown smothered Villanova, 67-46, at the Verizon Center.
Henry Sims and Hollis Thompson rounded out the Hoyas' quartet of double-digit scorers with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
"I thought Otto was good," said Georgetown head coach John Thompson III. "I thought it was a team effort today. If you look at the scoring and the rebounding also, I thought everyone came to play."
Georgetown (21-6, 11-5 Big East) bounced back from an 18-point loss at Seton Hall on Tuesday by holding Villanova (11-17, 4-12) to its lowest offensive output this season.
Dominic Cheek posted a game-high 19 points, the only Wildcat to score more than nine.
Villanova's leading scorer, Maalik Wayns, returned to the lineup after missing three straight games with a sprained left knee. The rust was evident, however. Wayns finished with just three points on 1-of-10 shooting.
It was an uphill climb all afternoon for the Wildcats. Georgetown registered the game's first six points, and Villanova fell behind by as many as 17 in the first half.
A pair of Porter free throws put the Hoyas up 25-8 with 5:30 remaining, but Villanova showed some life with a 15-2 burst and drew within 27-23 on a Cheek three-pointer. Porter, though, knocked down a trey to give Georgetown a 30-23 halftime lead.
The Wildcats converted only six of their 25 field goals attempts (24 percent) in the second half, as Georgetown's advantage reached a game-high 24 points inside the final minute.
"I think they got great balance, they got length, obviously they execute their offense well," Villanova head coach Jay Wright said about the Hoyas.
Porter, Clark, Sims and Thompson each had six rebounds...Villanova suffered its fourth straight loss and fell to 1-9 on the road this season...Georgetown improved to 14-1 at home...The Hoyas have won eight of the last nine meetings...Mouphtaou Yarou had nine points and seven boards for the Wildcats.
