Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - John Jenkins scored 21 points to lead the Vanderbilt Commodores as they defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks, 59-48, in a Southeastern Conference tilt at Memorial Gym.
Festus Ezeli added 14 points for Vanderbilt (20-8, 9-4 SEC), while Lance Goulbourne scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Bruce Ellington led South Carolina (10-17, 2-11) with 15 points. Damien Leonard chipped in 10 points and Damontre Harris pulled down six boards as the Gamecocks lost for the second time in a row and for the sixth time in seven tries.
The game went into halftime tied up 22-22 after South Carolina erased an early five-point deficit. Vanderbilt outscored the visitors 14-6 in the paint in the first half, but the Gamecocks knocked down 4-of-10 from three-point range to stay even.
Jeffrey Taylor's layup with 17:11 left to play put the Commodores up for good. Vanderbilt built a double-digit lead after the break by converting 23-of-26 from the charity stripe. South Carolina struggled as it made just 28.1 percent of its field goal attempts in the final 20 minutes.
The Commodores were able to push to their third straight victory by holding a 34-27 edge in the rebounding battle and attempting 24 more free throws than South Carolina. Despite attempting 16 more field goals, the Gamecocks made just three more shots from the field than the hosts.
