Mobile, AL (Sports Network) - Mychal Ammons scored 17 points as the South Alabama Jaguars pulled off a late comeback to take down the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers 66-61 in a Sun Belt Conference bout at the Mitchell Center.
The win for South Alabama (15-10, 7-7 Sun Belt) is its third straight. Augustine Rubit tallied 10 points and 13 rebounds while Javier Carter also notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
For Western Kentucky (9-18, 5-9), Derrick Gordon recorded 16 points and nine rebounds. Jamal Crook added 14 points and Teeng Akol netted 11 for the Hilltoppers, who have lost three of four.
Neither team shot well in the first half, with South Alabama draining 10-of-30 from the field and Western Kentucky making good on just 11-of-29 of its field goals. The Hilltoppers took a 26-24 lead into halftime.
Western Kentucky led by as many as 10 in the second half, but South Alabama climbed all the way back to take a 58-57 lead with 2:45 left in the game on an Ammons jumper and it would never give back the lead.
The Jaguars shot 18-of-22 from the foul line while the Hilltoppers made only 6-of-12 of their free-throws.
