Huntsville, TX (Sports Network) - Curtis Dennis scored 14 points as the Toledo Rockets won a 59-58 thriller over the Sam Houston State Bearkats in a BracketBuster matchup at Johnson Coliseum.
JuliusBrown and Rian Pearson each added 12 for Toledo (13-14). The Rockets have now won three of their last four.
Steven Werner posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds for Sam Houston State (11-16). Konner Tucker had 14 points of his own and Marcus James chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds. The Bearkats had won three of four entering play.
Both teams shot an even 50.0 percent from the floor but Toledo led 34-27 at the half by outscoring Sam Houston State 9-3 from three point range.
The Bearkats took a 51-49 lead with 5:18 remaining but the Rockets then scored the next four points to hold a 53-51 advantage. Sam Houston State tied the game on its next possession before another 4-0 spurt from Toledo. Brown nailed two free throws with 14 seconds left that made the score 59-56. Sam Houston tipped in a missed three pointer on its next possession and fouled on the inbound but despite a Toledo miss on the free throw couldn't get a chance at a game winner.
The Bearkats had the edge on the boards outrebounding the Rockets 35-29 in the losing effort.
