GAME NOTES: The Wofford Terriers will look to continue their momentum building run towards the postseason as they step out of conference action and hit the road to square off with the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in this year's edition of the BracketBusters event.
This will be the 19th encounter between Wofford and CSU. The Buccaneers hold a 10-8 lead in the all-time series which has been idle since the 2004-2005 season.
The Terriers won their second game in a row on Wednesday as they picked up a 72-59 decision over the Elon Phoenix to improve to 17-11 overall. After a trip to last year's Big Dance, the Terriers are four games back in the SoCon Standings. Head coach Mike Young has done a great job stressing ball control, as his team has recorded more assists than turnovers in five straight games. The Terriers are not a run and gun sensation, as they average only 64.1 ppg, but they are a solid defensive unit with an allowed average of only 62.1 ppg.
Wofford is led by its talented backcourt duo which consists of Kevin Giltner and Brad Loesing. Giltner is leading the team in scoring with 15.3 ppg on 40.4 percent shooting from the field. Loesing is second on the team in scoring (14.5), and is handing out 5.5 assists per contest as well. Karl Cochran is a serviceable role player with scoring ability and Lee Skinner is reeling in 5.7 boards per game.
CSU won its second game in a row on Tuesday as it handled Gardner-Webb and walked away with a 73-58 triumph. The Buccaneers are now 16-10 overall and 10-6 in Big South action. Head coach Barclay Radebaugh had to be pleased with his team's performance against Gardner-Webb, as it knocked down 53.8 percent of its field goal attempts and forced 17 turnovers on the defensive end of the floor. CSU is ranked 24th in the NCAA in scoring offense with an average of 77.2 ppg.
Kelvin Martin heads the balanced attack for CSU with team-best averages of 14.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game. The senior forward recorded two-straight double-doubles before posting 15 points against Gardner- Webb on Tuesday. Saah Nimley, Arlon Harper, and Mathiang Muo all get into the mix on the offensive end consistently and carry double-digit scoring averages. Nimley also hands out a team-high 3.8 assists per contest.
This will be a clash between a controlled, defensive minded Wofford team and a fast break, get out and go styled CSU squad. Both sides have talent and the ability to beat the other. The team which is able to control the pace more successfully will most likely win as their opponent is out of sync.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Wofford 68, Charleston Southern 64
