NCAA Game Summary - U-A-B at S-M-U
(Wednesday, February 15th)
Final Score: UAB 47, SMU 28
Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - K.C. Whitaker scored a game-high 17 points and cleared six rebounds off the bench for UAB as the Blazers crushed the SMU Mustangs, 47-28, in Conference USA play at Moody Coliseum.
Also scoring in double figures for the Blazers (11-14, 6-6 C-USA) was Cameron Moore who recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, his efforts on the glass matched by Jordan Swing as the team won for the fourth time in five outings.
The Mustangs (11-15, 2-9) failed to put a single player in double figures in the meeting, as Robert Nyakundi came the closest with nine points on 3-of-9 shooting from the floor before fouling out in the team's second straight loss and the seventh in eight games.
Believe it or not, the Mustangs actually led by three points early in the first half, but the hosts ended up shooting a woeful 4-of-26 from the floor, including 1-of-15 behind the three-point line, as they fell behind 17-12 at the break. UAB was only marginally better from the floor at only 27.8 percent.
The second half was just as brutal for SMU as the squad knocked down just 4- of-20 from the field, 2-of-14 beyond the arc, en route to the 19-point home loss.
Four days ago the Mustangs produced what was then a season-low 39 points in a four-point loss to Rice. Tonight's total was the second-lowest of the season for any Division I program, after Towson and Arkansas State put up a mere 27 versus Drexel and Louisville, respectively.
As far as a team record is concerned, dating back to 1950 this is the lowest point total for the Mustangs at Moody Coliseum, the previous mark being 36 points in a five-point win over Texas-Arlington in 1989.
Again, going back to 1950, the lowest overall scoring output at any venue for the Ponies was a mere 26 logged at TCU on this same date back in 1956.
