GAME NOTES: The Charlotte 49ers will look to continue their winning streak as they head to UD Arena to take on the Dayton Flyers in an Atlantic 10 Conference affair.
This will be the 11th meeting in the all-time series between the 49ers and Dayton. The Flyers lead the series 6-4 after a 69-51 win in Charlotte last season. It was the second straight win over Charlotte for Dayton. The head coaches are familiar with each other, as they were both assistants under Thad Matta at Ohio State from 2007-2009.
The 49ers ended their four-game losing streak with a win over Fordham before they returned home to defeat Rhode Island 73-66 on Saturday. Charlotte shot 48 percent from the floor and held the Rams to 35.4 percent shooting in the contest to win their second in a row. Head coach Alan Major's squad is in 10th place in the A-10 with a 4-6 league record. Overall, Charlotte is 12-11. The 49ers have been outscored by an average margin of 3.4 ppg in league action.
Chris Braswell is pacing Charlotte with 14.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game. The junior forward scored nine points in 22 minutes of action his last time out, which ended his streak of consecutive double-digit scoring finishes at eight. Javarris Barnett is the second leading scorer with an average of 12.5 ppg, and DeMario Mayfield is adding 10.7 ppg. Pierria Henry is handing out a team-high 3.3 apg. Jamar Briscoe has a decent outing against Rhode Island, as he netted 13 points in the team's win.
The Flyers ended their four-game losing streak their last time out as they outlasted Fordham to pick up a 72-70 victory in an overtime thriller. The Flyers shot just 35 percent from the floor in their victory over Fordham, which was the second-straight game they were held under 40 percent. The victory made UD 15-9 overall and 5-5 in conference play, which positions it three games back of the first place Temple Owls. Head coach Archie Miller's squad has allowed opponents to score 67.9 ppg this year, while it averages 71.0 ppg itself.
Forward Chris Johnson stepped up big time against Fordham, as he paced the squad with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Johnson is second on the team in scoring with 11.4 ppg, and is UD's top rebounder with 6.2 rpg. Kevin Dillard still has team-best averages of 12.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Matt Kavanaugh, Josh Parker, and Paul Williams are all solid contributors for the Flyers, but the team will need everyone to start performing better if they hope to become a legitimate contender for the Atlantic 10 crown.
Dayton is in a must-win situation as it battles for position in the A-10 standings. The 49ers are not going to be an easy opponent as Braswell is as good a forward as they come. With the rowdy home crowd at their backs, the Flyers should be able to make it two in a row.
