GAME NOTES: The Dayton Flyers will look to turn it around as they head to the Bronx to take on the Fordham Rams in Atlantic 10 Conference action at Rose Hill Gym.
This will is the only scheduled meeting between the programs this season. Dayton leads the rivalry 21-5 after a decisive 91-57 in last season's only battle.
The Flyers lost their fourth in a row last Saturday when they dropped a 58-50 decision to the Saint Louis Billikens in Missouri. The road journey ends today in the Bronx, and Dayton will try to bounce back from its season-worst .246 shooting performance it had its last time out. The defeat made UD 14-9 overall and 4-5 in conference play, which positions it three games back of the first place Temple Owls. Head coach Archie Miller's squad has allowed opponents to score 76 ppg on 49.8 percent shooting during their losing streak. The Flyers four conference wins came against team four of the top five team's in the A-10.
Point guard Kevin Dillard will need to put the team on his back to end the losing streak. Dillard is carrying team-high averages of 12.9 points and 6.0 assists per contest. The junior guard has scored in double figures in six straight appearances and leads the league in assists per game. Chris Johnson is second on the squad with 10.9 ppg, but the team has been less spectacular since losing Josh Benson to a season-ending injury. Matt Kavanaugh and Paul Williams will need to step up their outputs to help the Flyers get back to their winning ways.
Fordham's 69-62 loss to Charlotte last Saturday gave it the second-worst record in A-10 action as it is 2-7 in conference play. The Rams couldn't produce on the offensive end against the 49ers and managed to shoot 30.9 percent from the field in the losing effort. Head coach Tom Pecora has seen his team struggle to net points all season, as it ranks last in the league with a mediocre average of 62.1 ppg. The Rams have not been much better on the other end of the hardwood, as they allow opponents to score 70.5 ppg.
Fordham is led by junior Chris Gaston as he averages team-highs in scoring (16.1 ppg) and rebounding (10.2 rpg). Gaston gave a noble effort in the loss to Charlotte, as he scored 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the defeat. Bryan Smith did his best to help out Gaston in the contest, but finished with 14 points after an unimpressive 3-of-13 shooting performance from the field in the contest. Branden Frazier is second on the team in scoring with 12.2 ppg.
The Flyers really need to end their losing streak today. Dayton is in the middle of the pack in the league right now, but holds the tie-breaker over many of the top teams. If it can manage to string together a few wins, Dayton will be back at the top in no time. Gaston is going to continue to overpower teams, but his strong play has not led to any big victories since Fordham knocked off Harvard on Jan. 3rd.
