Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Halil Kanacevic recorded a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Saint Joseph's Hawks to a 70-66 victory over the La Salle Explorers in an Atlantic 10 Conference battle at The Palestra.
Carl Jones added 13 points for Saint Joseph's (15-9, 5-4 A-10).
Earl Pettis led La Salle (17-7, 6-3) with 17 points on 6-of-18 shooting from the floor. Ramon Galloway finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Sam Mills scored 11 points. The loss snapped the Explorers' four-game winning streak.
The Hawks took a 42-33 lead into the intermission after they shot 56.7 percent from the floor in the opening period. La Salle made just 35.7 percent of its field goals, but remained close by going 7-of-7 from beyond the arc in the first half.
The Explorers put together a comeback effort after the break as they attempted 14 more field goals and shot 31.6 percent in the second period. Pettis dunked it in to make it a one-point game with 11 seconds remaining in the contest. C.J. Aiken pushed the Hawks' lead to 69-66 with a pair of free throws before Pettis missed a game-tying three-point attempt with two seconds left. Langston Galloway secured the rebound and added a free throw to put it out of reach. Saint Joseph's went 7-of-24 from the field after halftime, but made up for it by converting 14-of-18 from the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes.
Saint Joseph's won the battle inside as it held a 43-35 advantage in the rebounding battle and outscored the Explorers, 30-16, in the paint.
