GAME NOTES: The North Texas Mean Green attempt to gain ground on the Sun Belt Conference front-runners when the team travels to Monroe, Louisiana to take on the ULM Warhawks.
After starting the year 1-4, North Texas has been able to salvage the season with solid play of late. The Mean Green has won three of four, including a convincing 84-67 verdict over Western Kentucky on Thursday.
ULM has been the Sun Belt's worst team so far, winning only two games in 18 tries. The Warhawks were able to snap a season-long nine-game losing streak on January 7 against FIU, but lost to Arkansas-Little Rock last Saturday in blowout fashion, 72-51.
ULM holds a 28-21 advantage in the all-time series with UNT, and the Warhawks were victorious in the last meeting, taking an 82-75 decision last February.
North Texas boasts the Sun Belt's third-best scoring offense (70.2 ppg) as well as its third-ranked scoring defense (64.4 ppg). The Mean Green are led on offense by Chris Jones, who nets a league-leading 14.6 ppg. Jones is also a solid defender, logging 2.5 steals per game. The team has recently welcomed star freshman Tony Mitchell to the lineup, as he had missed the first nine games due to eligibility issues. Mitchell averages 14 ppg while draining an astounding 66.7 percent of his total shots and he grabs 8.6 rpg as well. The rookie had a huge 21-point, 13-rebound performance against Western Kentucky, his second double-double in three games. Jordan Williams rounds out the UNT scoring attack with 11.1 ppg.
ULM's struggles have been reflected in its stats, as the team ranks last in the conference in points per game (59.4) and next-to-last in scoring defense (68.9 ppg). Fred Brown has been one of the few bright spots for the Warhawks this season, as he is dropping 13.1 ppg, though he does so on a disappointing 37.3 percent shooting effort. Charles Winborne contributes 10.6 ppg and 1.8 three pointers per game, while Steven McClellan scores 9.2 ppg and grabs a team-leading 7.2 rpg. McClellan was the standout in the recent loss to Arkansas-Little Rock, netting 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting and securing seven rebounds.
Home court for ULM has hardly been an advantage this season as the team is winless in eight tries at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Expect North Texas to continue its recent success and win in convincing fashion.
