Laramie, WY (Sports Network) - Behind a season-high 18 points from Luke Martinez and a stifling defensive performance, the Wyoming Cowboys routed the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks in the Jim Thorpe Classic at Arena-Auditorium.
Martinez was a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor, including five three-pointers for Wyoming (5-1), which is off to its best start since the 2008-09 season. Francisco Cruz chipped in with 10 points for the Cowboys, who shot 50 percent from the floor overall.
The Hawks (1-6) were led in the scoring column by Percy Woods, who netted 18 points. Hillary Haley chipped in seven points off the bench for UMES, which has lost five straight games.
The Cowboys opened with a 13-2 run and never looked back, taking a 45-21 lead into halftime thanks to a stellar 16-of-28 shooting in the first 20 minutes. Wyoming cooled off a bit after intermission, connecting on just 9-of-22 field goal attempts, but the Hawks were unable to capitalize.
Wyoming was able to hold UMES to a mere 35.4 percent shooting in the game, while scoring 24 points off of 21 Hawks' turnovers.
