Laramie, WY (Sports Network) - Trevor Gaskins led the way with 15 points, including 14 in the second half, powering the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs to a 73-54 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore in the first game of the Jim Thorpe Classic at Arena-Auditorium.
Gaskins was joined in double figures by four other Bulldogs (2-1), as J.L. Lewis added a career-high 13 points, followed by Cordarius Johnson, Romario Souza and Michale Kyser, who finished with 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
UMES (1-5) was led in scoring by Percy Woods and Hillary Haley with 15 points apiece.
The first half saw momentum swings, with Tech leading by six points with just under four minutes to play in the frame, only to have the Hawks go on a 10-2 run to close out the half and take a 31-29 lead into the break.
The Bulldogs turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, holding UMES without a field goal over the first 8:32 off the stanza to take control of the game. Maryland-Eastern Shore got no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Louisiana Tech shot 46.4 percent from the floor overall, including a blistering 58.6 percent in the second half. The Bulldogs forced 19 turnovers and turned them into 23 points.
Louisiana Tech will take on Portland State in this event on Saturday, while UMES takes on Wyoming.
