Tulsa, OK (Sports Network) - A pair of free throws by Kyle Jones with under 20 seconds to play were key for Arkansas-Pine Bluff as the Golden Lions secured a 58-56 win over the FIU Panthers as part of the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off at the Mabee Center.
Jones finished the night with just those two points off the bench for the Golden Lions (1-2) as they won their first game of the season. Savalace Townsend and Mitchell Anderson both recorded 19 points for UAPB, the latter clearing seven rebounds as well. Daniel Broughton came close to registering a double-double as he tallied nine points and a game-high nine rebounds.
The Panthers (1-2) were paced by Jeremy Allen who tallied a game-high 21 points and also registered six steals on the night. Phil Taylor delivered 13 points and six assists, but at the same time he was charged with seven of the unit's 19 miscues.
At the 9:40 mark of the first half the Panthers found themselves with an 11- point lead at 17-6, but with less than five minutes remaining in the period the teams were locked up at 23-23 and from there the Golden Lions pulled ahead to claim a 33-25 edge at the break.
In the second half Pine Bluff built the lead to 14 points less than two minutes in, but down the stretch the squad had to battle hard to capture the narrow victory.
The Golden Lions shot 6-of-13 behind the three-point line which helped the squad to overcome 25 turnovers which FIU traded in for 20 points.
