GAME NOTES: The Huskies of Houston Baptist will face the Titans of Cal State Fullerton in the final portion of the Beryl Shipley Classic.
The Huskies are 1-3 after falling to Nicholls State in their second game of the Beryl Shipley Classic. Before facing the Colonels, Houston Baptist lost to Louisiana in the opening round. Houston Baptist finished 5-26 overall and 2-12 in the Great West in 2010-2011. Ron Cottrell is 396-257 as he is in the early part of his 21st season with Houston Baptist. The Huskies moved into the NCAA Division I ranks in 2009-2010 after years of being a perennial powerhouse in the NAIA ranks.
The Titans are 3-0 after handing Louisiana its first home loss of the early season. Bob Burton's squad is hoping to bounce back from its 11-20 finish in 2010-2011 which was the worst of his tenure. Burton is now 137-112 in his ninth year as the head coach of Cal State Fullerton.
This will be the first meeting between the Huskies and Titans.
Houston Baptist has now lost both its game in the Beryl Shipley Classic after falling to Louisiana and Nicholls State. The Huskies were led by Marcus Davis against the Colonels as he scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds. Ronald March Jr. scored 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Joe Latas pulled down a team- best nine rebounds in the loss. Houston Baptist shot 40.6 percent from the field and 34.8 from beyond the arc in the loss. Nicholls State shot 53.7 percent from the field and 44 percent from three-poinr range against the Huskies.
Orane Chin provided a double-double for the Titans in their win over Louisiana with 18 points and 10 rebounds. D.J. Seeley also scored 17 despite a poor shooting performance. The Titans won despite having 22 turnovers in the contest. Cal State Fullerton's permimeter defense was impressive as it held the Ragin' Cajuns to just an 11.1-percent clip from beyond the arc.
Cal State Fullerton has been rolling while the Huskies have been struggling. The one-two punch of Chin and Seeley will be too much for Houston Baptist to handle.
