GAME NOTES: Cal State Fullerton and Nicholls State will meet at the Cajundome to tip-off the Beryl Shipley Classic in Louisiana.
The Titans are 1-0 after beating the Division III Redlands Bulldogs in their opener. Bob Burton's squad is hoping to bounce back from its 11-20 finish in 2010-2011 which was the worst of his tenure. Burton is now 135-112 in his nine years as the head coach of Cal State Fullerton.
J.P. Piper is now in his eighth year as the head coach of Nicholls State with a career record of 78-128. The Colonels 14-14 finished in 2010-2011 and is returning five-of-seven of their letter winners. Nicholls State is 0-2 to start the year after road losses at Louisiana State and Tulane.
The Titans dominated the Redlands in their first action of the season. Isiah Umipig led the way with 34 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field and 8- of-12 from beyond the arc. Kwame Brown did a good job in the game as a floor general scoring 12 while dishing out eight assists and grabbing seven rebounds. The Titans average of 118 points per game leads the nation. Cal State Fullerton shot 55.4 percent from the field in the game and outrebounded its opponent 54-26. The Titans turned the ball over 23 times in the contest.
The Colonels' 0-2 start is not a surprise considering their competition. Nicholls State is led in scoring by Trevon Lewis with 12.0 ppg. Lewis scored 19 against the Tigers before being held to just five by the Green Wave. Every player on the roster struggled scoring against Tulane as no Colonel player reached double figures. Nicholls State showed the ability to light it up against the Tigers as it shot 51 percent from the field and 48.1 percent from three point range in the contest. The Colonels completely fell off against Tulane as they made just 34 percent of their shots in the blow-out loss. The Green Wave exposed Nicholls State's rebounding weakness as they beat the Colonels on the boards by a 14-rebound margin.
Cal State Fullerton's blowout win over a Division III opponent is not very telling considering its competition. The Titans did take care of business in the contest and shot the ball very well. The Colonels' weak performance against Tulane will improve against Cal State Fullerton, but it might not be enough to give them their first win of the year if Umipig continues to scorch the nets.
