GAME NOTES: The first-ever meeting between the Bryant Bulldogs and the Aggies of UC Davis takes place today in San Diego as part of the Basketball Traveler's Classic.
Both of these teams are coming off losses in their respective season openers on Friday. Bryant was pitted against host San Diego State and was taken down in a 75-63 final, even though the Bulldogs were within a point at the break at 28-27. As for the Aggies, their meeting with Southern Utah was much closer, but the result was the same as the team suffered a 76-75 setback to the Thunderbirds.
Both teams will be back in action again on Sunday, with Davis taking on host San Diego State and the Bulldogs facing off against Southern Utah to complete the event.
The Bulldogs were paced by Alex Francis who tied for the game high with 20 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field, while Frankie Dobbs sank 5-of-10 behind the three-point line on his way to 17 points, but even those efforts were not enough as the visitors dropped a double-digit decision to the Aztecs on Friday. Both teams had trouble finding the mark from the field in the first half, the Aztecs shooting 36.4 percent and missing all eight chances beyond the arc, while Bryant was 34.4 percent accurate from the floor. The Bulldogs failed to make a single trip to the free-throw line in the first 20 minutes, yet trailed by just a point at the half. A big part of the problem for the Bulldogs was that they made it to the free-throw line just four times the entire night, compared to SDSU which was granted 25 free-throw attempts.
The Aggies were paced by Ryan Sypkens who dropped in 19 points before picking up his fifth personal foul on Friday night as the team bowed to the Southern Utah Thunderbirds by just a single point. Josh Ritchart tallied 16 points, although he shot just 1-of-7 behind the three-point line, followed by Tyrell Corbin with 15 points, Ryan Howley with 11 and J.T. Adenrele with 10 points off the bench. The Aggies were easily handled on the glass by Southern Utah, 43-23, and finished up with a mere three offensive rebounds for the game. UC Davis also didn't do itself any favors by shooting a dismal 8-of-25 behind the three-point line and 15-of-25 at the charity stripe.
Both of these teams can certainly make improvements after their efforts on Friday, but given that UC Davis played a much tighter game and gets more rest heading into this meeting should give the Aggies an advantage.
