San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Chase Tapley scored a team-high 20 points, leading three starters in double figures, as the San Diego State Aztecs posted a 75-63 win over the Bryant Bulldogs in first-round action of the Basketball Traveler's Invitational.
Tapley also cleared 11 rebounds, handed out six assists and made three steals for the Aztecs (1-0) in the win. Xavier Thames dropped in 16 points and handed out a game-high eight assists, while Garrett Green registered a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the hosts.
The Bulldogs (0-1) were paced by Alex Francis who tied for the game high with 20 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field, while Frankie Dobbs sank 5-of-10 behind the three-point line on his way to 17 points.
Both teams had trouble finding the mark from the field in the first half, the Aztecs shooting 36.4 percent and missing all eight chances beyond the arc, while Bryant was 34.4 percent accurate from the floor. The Bulldogs failed to make a single trip to the free-throw line in the first 20 minutes, yet trailed by just a single point at the half, 28-27.
In the second half SDSU connected on a sizzling 76.0 percent from the floor as the hosts cruised to the 12-point win.
San Diego State picked up the win despite shooting only 2-of-12 behind the three-point line and 11-of-25 at the charity stripe.
