GAME NOTES: UNC-Wilmington aims for its third consecutive win tonight as the Seahawks host Charleston Southern in a BracketBuster matchup from Trask Coliseum.
The Seahawks are coming off a 51-43 home triumph over Drexel on Tuesday in a Colonial Athletic Association affair. Chad Tomko posted a double-double consisting of 22 points and 13 rebounds in leading the Seahawks to the victory. Keith Rendleman added a double-double as well for UNCW, as the forward finished with 15 points and 10 boards in the win. The Seahawks held the Dragons to a poor 24.2 percent effort from the field in the second half. The Seahawks have won three of their last four outings and moved within one game of the .500 level on the year.
UNCW has used many different lineups this season, in fact seven over the last seven contests. Rendleman, a sophomore forward, is the only player to start all 26 games. He's averaging 10.6 points a team-best 7.9 rebounds. Tomko leads the squad with 17.3 points and has 112 assists for the season over 27 games. Junior guard Trevor Deloach averages 9.3 points, followed by senior backcourt mate Ahmad Grant (8.4). UNCW is making its sixth BrackBuster appearance, having previously lost four times, most recently to Radford last year.
Charleston Southern erased a 10-point deficit at halftime and rallied to beat UNC-Asheville, 79-70, on Tuesday night. That snapped a three-game skid for the Buccaneers. Senior guard Jamarco Warren poured in 31 points, going 9-of-14 from the field and 11-of-13 at the free-throw line.
The Bucs, led by Warren's 17.3 ppg, rank at the top of the Big South, both as a team and individually, in many categories. They are first in free throw percentage (.750), second in three-point field goal percentage (.363) and third in steals (9.0 spg). Kelvin Martin is second on the team in scoring at 12.1 per game and averages a club-best 9.1 rpg. Guard Jeremy Sexton (10.6 ppg) is the other player averaging double figures for the Bucs.
The Buccaneers have never won a game at Trask Coliseum, as the arena opened in the late 1970's. Overall, CSU is 4-12 against the Seahawks in Wilmington, losing the last 10 games played there. This is the first meeting between the two schools since March 3, 1984, a 76-70 overtime win for Charleston Southern. Expect the Seahawks to take control early and give UNCW head man Buzz Peterson a victory in his 400th career coaching game.
