GAME NOTES: For the first time ever Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Montreat will collide on the hardwood when the Islanders take on the Cavaliers in the consolation game of the Dr. Pepper Classic at McKenzie Arena.
The Islanders were no match for Georgia State on Wednesday, as they were pounded by a 72-42 margin. It was the eighth loss on the year for Texas A&M- CC, which will remain outside of Corpus Christi for its next two contests, as the team will battle Texas Tech and McNeese State.
As for the Cavaliers, they suffered their seventh loss on the year with an 89-51 loss to Chattanooga on Wednesday. Out of the seven losses this year for Montreat, six have come on the road.
Producing at the offensive end of the floor has been a problem for the Islanders, who enter this contest netting just 63.2 ppg. Demond Watt is currently leading the team with 15.4 ppg on the season, and is also collecting a team-best 9.4 rpg. Terence Jones is the only other player posting double- figures on the roster and comes into this game contributing 10.2 ppg. Texas A&M-CC's offensive issues continued in the team's recent loss to Georgia State, as the Islanders finished with just 42 points behind a weak 33.3 percent shooting effort, which included an embarrassing 1-of-14 clip from behind the arc. The Islanders did not have a single player finish in double- figures, as Watt paced the squad with a nine-point effort.
The Cavaliers were simply no match for Chattanooga on Wednesday and it was evident from start to finish, as Montreat shot a weak 25.0 percent from the floor, and struggled from long range (8-of-34) and the foul line (9-of-17) as well. Terrell Mosley only shot 3-of-13 from the field in the contest, but still managed to finish with 11 points, and Giles Mack also tallied 11 points, despite shooting just 33.3 percent. Matt Rushing, who entered the contest averaging 11.3 ppg on the season, registered just six points in the loss and committed four turnovers as well.
Neither team has had consistent success, and both teams were blown out on Wednesday. Only one of them can bounce back and this evening that will be the Islanders.
