GAME NOTES: The Georgia State Panthers and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders will tangle today as part of the Dr. Pepper Classic from Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Montreat and the host team, Chattanooga, will do battle today as well, and the winners and losers of each bout will square off tomorrow.
It is shocking to see that Georgia State has already suffered three overtime defeats this season, the most recent of which came last Wednesday by a 74-72 final against Georgia Southern. The Panthers are a lackluster 4-5 overall and have lost two of their last three outings. They are members of the Colonial Athletic Association and will play their first league game against VCU on January 3rd.
As for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, a member of the Southland Conference, it will begin league play on January 8th against McNeese State. The Islanders have lost two of their last three games to fall to 4-7 overall, and while they certainly put forth a strong effort against Memphis in the most recent outing last week, that tilt ended in a 68-63 setback on the road.
The Islanders won their only previous meeting with the Panthers almost four decades ago.
Georgia State is far from threatening at the offensive end of the court, as the squad is generating a mere 66.6 ppg. There is only one double-digit scorer in the fold, as Brandon McGee provides 10.3 ppg on 50 percent shooting from the floor. Eric Buckner is close behind with his 9.2 ppg, and he is shooting 55.4 percent from the field while topping the club in rebounds (6.6 rpg) and blocked shots (20). Strong defense has been a constant for the Panthers, who are limiting foes to 65.4 ppg on 39.3 percent field goal efficiency. Also, they are outrebounding opponents by 4.4 rpg, but the losing overall record is the most important stat of all. Against Georgia Southern last week, Georgia State shot a solid 50.9 percent from the floor, but 21 turnovers and poor defense cost the team a chance to win. McGee poured in 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in defeat, while Buckner hit 7-of-8 shots from the floor en route to 14 points.
The go-to guy at the offensive end of the court for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is Demond Watt, as he is netting 16.0 ppg on 60.2 percent shooting from the floor. More than just a scorer, Watt is ripping down 9.9 rpg as well, and he has both 14 blocks and 14 steals to his credit. The only other double-digit scorer in the fold is Terence Jones, as he checks in with 10.4 ppg despite his 37.4 percent field goal efficiency. The Islanders are posting 65.2 ppg while allowing 74.0 ppg to opponents. Hollis Hill, who is averaging only 3.7 ppg this season, came through with 16 points off the bench for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the narrow loss to Memphis. Jones and Justin Reynolds tallied 11 points in the setback, while Watt posted 10 points and eight boards. The Islanders were outscored 21-6 from the foul line, the most obvious factor in the loss.
Give a narrow edge to Texas A&M-CC today, as it figures to draw some confidence from the solid effort against Memphis.
