Walker scores 30 as UConn holds off New Hampshire

Storrs, CT (Sports Network) - Kemba Walker scored 30 points, as the seventh- ranked Connecticut Huskies defeated the New Hampshire Wildcats, 62-55, at Gampel Pavilion.

Shabazz Napier netted 11 points for the Huskies (6-0), who remained perfect on the young season and will continue their five-game homestand on Friday against UMBC. Connecticut opens its Big East slate at Pittsburgh on December 27.

Ferg Myrick led the way with 19 points for New Hampshire (4-2), which has dropped two of three since a 3-0 start to the season. James Valladares scored 12 points in the loss.

UNH led 24-23 as the second half commenced, and the action remained tight. A fast-break layup by Napier tied the score at 34-34 nearly six minutes into the stanza.

Soon after, a three-pointer by Walker and a transition layup by Napier gave the Huskies a 42-36 edge. Near the midpoint of the frame, a triple from the left corner by Tyrone Conley brought the visitors within 46-44, but a three- point play by Napier on the ensuing possession put UConn on top by five.

With under five minutes remaining, a running layup by Walker through the lane made it 55-48 and after UNH missed on its next possession, the Huskies answered with a pair of free throws by Walker for a nine-point lead.

Myrick cut the Wildcats' deficit to 58-53 with a three-pointer with one minute to play, but the Huskies used solid foul shooting down the stretch and held on for the victory.
