Auburn, AL (Sports Network) - Jeffrey Merritt scored 12 points, leading three players in double figures, as the Samford Bulldogs secured a 60-56 win over the Campbell Fighting Camels as part of the Global Sports Hoops Showcase at Auburn Arena.
Also scoring in double digits for the Bulldogs (3-2) were Andy King and Josh Bedwell with 10 points apiece in the team's third win in the last four outings.
The Fighting Camels (2-3) were paced by Lorne Merthie with a game-high 22 points, shooting a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range and 8-of-13 from the floor overall in the setback.
Samford led by as many as seven points in the first half, shooting an impressive 9-of-17 behind the three-point line in the period to post a narrow 32-30 advantage at the break.
In the second half the Camels fought back, mostly by holding the Bulldogs to a total of just seven field goals in the frame. However, even after building a 10-point edge with about eight minutes to play in regulation, Campbell was unable to hold on and suffered the four-point loss.
Samford made up for the fact that it lost the rebounding battle (33-21) and watched the Camels force 13 turnovers which became 20 points, by hitting an impressive 14-of-30 beyond the arc.
