Blacksburg, VA (Sports Network) - Malcolm Delaney scored 20 points on 11-of-11 from the free throw line, leading 21st-ranked Virginia Tech to a season- opening 70-60 victory over Campbell.

Terrell Bell added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Hokies (1-0), who just missed on an NCAA Tournament berth last year and are still in search of their first appearance in the Big Dance since 2007. Dorenzo Hudson contributed with 10 points, while Jeff Allen had 11 points and 14 boards in the win.

Eric Griffin tallied 13 points and nine rebounds for the Fighting Camels (0-1), who won a share of the regular season Atlantic Sun Conference in 2009-10. Junard Hartley had 14 points in defeat.

Virginia Tech got off to a slow start, and Campbell grabbed a 9-6 lead early on Lorne Merthie's three-pointer.

The Fighting Camels continued to remain ahead for the first nine minutes until the Hokies moved ahead for good, 18-17, on a Delaney three. Delaney followed with three free throws to extend the margin to four, and Allen's dunk just inside five minutes put the hosts ahead, 28-22.

After Griffin answered for Campbell with a pair of free throws, Virginia Tech scored 11 straight points, with Delaney and Bell bookending the spurt with a three-pointer apiece for a 39-24 advantage.

The score stood at 41-26 at halftime.

Campbell began the second half strong and cut its deficit to 45-37 on a Rico Ferguson basket with just over 15 minutes remaining, but the Hokies quickly pushed their lead back above 10 on Jarell Eddie's layup with 12:11 left to make it 52-41.

The Fighting Camels couldn't put a large dent into their deficit, and Bell's layup with 5 1/2 minutes to play gave Virginia Tech a 61-45 advantage. The outcome was not in question the rest of the way.
