Harangody stars as Irish roll in second half

South Bend, IN (Sports Network) - Luke Harangody dropped in 29 points, pulled down 15 rebounds and even dished out four assists, carrying No. 23 Notre Dame to an 80-62 decision over the Kennesaw State Owls as part of the Chicago Invitational Challenge.

Tim Abromaitis chipped in 14 points, and Tory Jackson added eight points, five helpers and five boards for the Fighting Irish (5-0), who have won all five games this season by double-digits.

"We did a great job when defensive work needed to be done," Irish head coach Mike Brey said. "That's going to be big for us all year."

Kurtis Woods paced the Owls (2-2) with 18 points, and Markeith Cummings went for 12 points on 5-of-16 shooting in the team's second straight loss.

A pair of Tyrone Nash free throws had the Irish ahead, 19-9, at the 12:30 mark of the opening half. The Owls inched back and got within a point, 21-20, after LaDaris Dreen's jumper at the seven-minute mark.

Notre Dame ended the half on a 12-4 spurt, capped by a Harangody jumper for a 33-24 edge.

"I think we played pretty good the first half, I think we maintained a tempo. We just couldn't make a shot," Kennesaw State head coach Tony Ingle said.

Cummings' dunk three minutes into the second half cut Kennesaw State's deficit to 35-32, but seven quick points from the hosts, highlighted by an Abromaitis three-ball, made it a 10-point game.

The margin was six, 45-39, after a Woods dunk with 13 1/2 minutes left, but Notre Dame scored eight straight to make it a double-digit game again.

Abromaitis ended the rally with a slam and hit a three-pointer on the next possession, and the Owls were never able to recover.
