NCAA Game Summary - NC Central at North Carolina
(Wednesday, November 11th)
Final Score: (6) North Carolina 89, NC Central 42
Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Marcus Ginyard, a veteran player surrounded by plenty of fresh faces, scored a game-best 17 points and fellow stalwart Deon Thompson added 13, as sixth-ranked North Carolina routed North Carolina Central, 89-42, at the Dean Smith Center.
Another returning player, forward Tyler Zeller, added 12 points and six rebounds for the Tar Heels (2-0), who have opened the season with two lopsided victories. The game allowed North Carolina's freshmen to get acclimated to the Smith Center and game action. One of those freshmen, Leslie McDonald, scored seven points with six rebounds and heralded newcomer John Henson tallied four points with three rebounds and three blocks.
"All in all, much more pleased than I was on Monday night. And again, we're just so much more gifted and particularly so much bigger than they are. It was tough for the kids to maintain concentration. They keep wanting to look at the score because they're young. I keep telling them not to look at the score, and just play the game," Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams said.
C.J. Wilkerson paced North Carolina Central (0-1) with 16 points and T.J. Granger added eight. Joshua Worthy didn't score for the Eagles, but his presence had plenty of significance as he is the nephew of former Tar Heel great James Worthy.
"They are who we thought they were, for sure," stated Eagles head coach LeVelle Moton.
The Eagles hung right with the Tar Heels at the outset, cutting the deficit to 14-11 on a Granger jumper over 4 1/2 minutes in. Vincent Davis' trey about three minutes later drew the visitors even closer at 19-17. However, the Eagles then went over eight minutes without a field goal, as North Carolina scored the game's next 21 points. Henson's layup started the stretch and Ginyard's bucket with about 4 1/2 minutes to play in the half made the score 40-17.
After North Carolina Central connected for four points, the Tar Heels tallied the half's final 11 points capped by a pair of Dexter Strickland jumpers and a bucket from Thompson for a 51-20 lead. North Carolina outscored the Eagles, 32-3, over the half's final seven-plus minutes.
The second half was more of the same as the lead grew to 70-26 on the heels of a 7-0 stretch, capped by two free throws from Thompson. The Tar Heels coasted to victory from there.
