NCAA Game Summary - Radford vs. North Carolina

(Thursday, March 19th)

Final Score: North Carolina 101, Radford 58

Greensboro, NC (Sports Network) - Tyler Hansbrough became the ACC's career scoring leader with a 22-point effort, as North Carolina made short work of the Radford Highlanders, 101-58, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Hansbrough now has 2,789 career points, surpassing the former record of 2,769 held by Duke's J.J. Redick.

"Well, it means a lot," Hansbrough said of the feat. "You know, I look back and think of all the players that I've watched when I was young and in the ACC. All of those, and for me to top all of the scorers in that league, it's special. It's an honor. But still, at the same time, you know, I came here to win the game today, and I didn't want to focus on individual goals."

Wayne Ellington poured in 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Tar Heels (29-4), who are the top seed in the South Region and will next play LSU in the second round. The Tigers moved on with a 75-71 win over Butler.

Danny Green added 15 points and 10 boards for UNC, which was without the services of ACC Player of the Year Ty Lawson as he continues to battle a stubborn toe injury.

Ed Davis chipped in 15 points for the Tar Heels, who are a No. 1 seed in the tourney for an NCAA-record 13th time.

Joey Lynch-Flohr had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Radford (21-12), which qualified by winning the Big South Tournament for just its second ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Amir Johnson donated 12 points and Kenny Thomas 11 in the loss. Artsiom Parakhouski notched 10 points and as many boards for the Highlanders.

Two free throws from Hansbrough early in the game gave UNC a 13-9 lead, and made Hansbrough the ACC's all-time leading scorer.

"Well, I just want to say it's been an honor to be able to play with a player that has the type of skills and caliber that Tyler has," said Ellington. "And just watching him, how hard he works and how consistent he is, you know, it's tough to be as consistent as he is, you know, night in and night out."

Parakhouski answered with a dunk, but the Tar Heels rattled off a 15-5 run to grab a 28-16 advantage. Davis had a pair of layups and Larry Drew's jumper closed it out right around the midway point.

Thomas' jumper brought Radford within nine points, 36-27, but UNC closed the first half on a 17-7 surge. Hansbrough knocked down a basket to spark the run and Davis closed it out with a pair from the line to make it 53-34 at intermission.

Ellington's layup closed out a 13-0 Tar Heels run that gave UNC a 68-38 lead with 16:35 still left to play. Hansbrough had six points on the burst, and the rout was on from there.
