Frisco Sandidge scored on Delaware State's first possession of the game, but the Hornets went scoreless until Greg Smith made a jumper around the midway point of the first half.
Notre Dame rattled off 14 straight points in the stretch and another 9-0 spurt capped by a McAlarney triple at the three-minute mark paced the Irish to a 39-21 edge at halftime.
The Notre Dame defense clamped down again in the second half, holding Delaware State without a point for seven minutes and netting 12 consecutive points, finished off by a Tyrone Nash free throw with 12 minutes to play.
The make gave the Irish a comfortable 57-28 lead that was never threatened.
"I thought it was good to get some guys extended minutes off the bench like (Tyrone) Nash and get him moving around heading towards Big East play," Irish head coach Mike Brey said.
Notre Dame extended the nation's second-longest home winning streak to 42 games...The Irish outscored the Hornets in the paint, 32-10...Nash finished with 10 points in the win.
