Thabeet, UConn crush Bryant
Hartford, CT (Sports Network) - Hasheem Thabeet had 16 points and 12 rebounds as the second-ranked Connecticut Huskies downed the Bryant Bulldogs, 88-58, at the XL Center.
Craig Austrie had 15 points and six boards while Jeff Adrien chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds for the Huskies (6-0), who have won their last three games by double-digits.
Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun garnered his 780th win in the game, which moved him into a tie with Lou Henson and Lute Olson for eighth place on the all-time list.
"It was a good win. It all comes from the way we practice," said Adrien. "And that started with Coach - he warned us about teams that have been upset."
Cecil Gresham had 19 points and Ryan McLean added 10 points and four boards for the Bulldogs (1-3), who failed to follow up their first win of the season -- last Saturday against Quinnipiac -- with another victory.
It was a tight game through much of the first half, but the Huskies ripped off a 16-3 run to take a 38-23 lead, as Austrie capped the run on a layup with a bit over three minutes to play in the first half.
Jerome Dyson then hit a basket in the closing moments of the first half and Connecticut held a 45-28 lead going into the locker room.
The Bulldogs tried to keep it close in the second half, but the Huskies steadily increased their lead and held a 72-49 advantage on Thabeet's slam with under 10 minutes to play.
Bryant was held without a point for almost four minutes as Connecticut cruised to the finish line.
This was the first regular season meeting between these two programs...The Huskies host Delaware State on Monday...Connecticut connected on 50.0 percent of its shots compared to just 39 percent shooting from Bryant...Dyson finished the game with 11 points and six boards.
