No. 8 Boston College cruises past Sacred Heart
Chestnut Hill, MA (Sports Network) - Craig Smith scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead eighth-ranked Boston College past Sacred Heart, 77-66, at Silvio O. Conte Forum.
John Oates added 15 points for the Eagles (6-0), who were coming off their Las Vegas Holiday Invitational title after beating Oklahoma State last Saturday. Jared Dudley chipped in 11 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
Kibwe Trim netted 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Pioneers (1-5), who have lost four straight. Tavio Hobson added 14 points and six assists in the loss, while Luke Granato scored 12 points.
Two straight three-point baskets by Boston College gave the Eagles an early 9-3 edge and Oates' conversion from beyond the arc later extended the lead to 16-6 with 13:58 left.
Another three-pointer by Oates with 12:02 remaining in the first half put the Eagles up 21-11 until the Pioneers used a 7-0 run to pull within 21-18. The two teams remained close and Trim's layup made cut it to 27-24 with 7:27 left in the first.
However, Boston College would then go on an 8-0 run, four points coming from Smith, to extend to 35-24 with 5:44 left in the half and the Eagles led 43-31 at the half.
Sean Marshall opened up the second with a layup for a 45-31 lead and Smith's jumper would later put the Eagles up 52-37 4:12 into the second half. Sacred Heart would pull to within 55-47 after a layup and free throw by Liam Potter with 12:49 left.
A 10-0 run by Boston College that included a pair of treys from Tyrese Rice put the Eagles ahead 65-47 and a late 7-0 run extended Boston College to a 77-61 edge and put the game away with 3:09 remaining.
Rice finished with 10 points while Marshall had 11...Jarrid Frye contributed eight points, nine rebounds and eight assists for Sacred Heart...The two teams last met in December of 2003...Dudley's 11 points put him over 1,000 for his career...Smith played in his 100th game for Boston College.
