Simon Khan bounced back from losing the BMW PGA Championship in a playoff by shooting a 5-under 67 on Monday in the first of two qualifying rounds for the U.S. Open.
The Englishman, who lost a four-hole playoff to Matteo Manassero at Wentworth on Sunday, is among five players who are one stroke behind leader John Parry. Also shooting a 67 were Sweden's Peter Hedblom, Denmark's Morten Orum Madsen and Spain's Pablo Larrazabal.
Former European Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal boosted hopes of a first U.S. Open appearance in five years by shooting a 68.
There are 12 places available for the June 12-16 tournament at Merion Golf Club. The second round is later Monday.
