Shenise Johnson scored 19 points off the bench and the San Antonio Silver Stars fought off a late comeback attempt from the Los Angeles Sparks to register an 83-78 victory Saturday at the AT&T Center.
Johnson hit on 8-of-13 field goal attempts, while Danielle Robinson totaled 18 points and seven assists to help the Silver Stars bounce back from a season- opening 79-64 home loss to Indiana. Jia Perkins added 14 points for San Antonio.
The Sparks trailed by 12 with under 7 1/2 minutes to go, but embarked on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to pull within 73-70. San Antonio's lead shrunk to two after Candace Parker converted a layup that cut Los Angeles' deficit to 78-76 with under a minute left.
Los Angeles failed to make a field goal thereafter, however, and the Silver Stars hit 5-of-6 foul shots down the stretch to seal the win.
Parker finished with 27 points and an impressive 20 rebounds for the Sparks, who began their season with a lopsided win over Seattle on Sunday. Lindsay Harding tallied 18 points in defeat.
