Sugar Rodgers scored 26 points and Georgetown overcame a record 3-point shooting night from Providence guard Tori Rule to defeat the Friars 81-61 Friday in the first round of the Big East tournament.
Rodgers, who had a triple-double against Providence earlier this season, added 10 rebounds and six assists for Georgetown (15-15), which never trailed. She had 21 of her points in the second half.
Rule hit 10 shots from behind the arc, a new tournament record, making half her attempts from long range. She scored 35 points in the losing effort for Providence, which finishes the season 7-23.
Georgetown will face sixth-seeded Villanova in Saturday's second round.
The Hoyas used an early 12-0 run to take a 23-9 lead and led 37-28 at halftime despite 20-points from Rule, who hit five 3-pointers in each half.
