Raymond Penn scored 14 points and dished out four assists to help Texas Southern defeat Alcorn State 57-48 Friday and snap an 11-game losing streak.
Penn made 5 of 12 shots from the field and Omar Strong had 11 points and five rebounds for Texas Southern (2-13, 1-1), which hadn't won since Nov. 26 against Louisiana-Lafayette.
Anthony Nieves led Alcorn State (3-14, 1-1) with 24 points and LeAntwan Luckett had 18 but the pair combined to shoot 38.4 percent (15 of 39) from the field. Alcorn State, which led 31-29 at halftime, shot 35.5 percent (11 of 31) in the first half but dipped to 20.7 percent (6 of 29) after intermission.
Texas Southern outscored Alcorn State 28-17 in the second half, when the Tigers hit just 28 percent (7 of 25) shots from the field but made 13 free throws after converting just one in the first half.
