Dwight Phillips, who won the long jump gold medal at the 2004 Olympics, will not have a chance to make the London Games.
Phillips said via Twitter that due to a recurring Achilles problem, he won't be able to participate at the U.S. Olympic Trials. The men's long jump final is scheduled for June 24.
"I have had surgery and I am looking forward to competing at the World Championship in 2013 which will be my final year," Phillips tweeted.
The 34-year-old Phillips is a four-time World champion in the long jump. He finished fourth in the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2008, preventing him from a return trip to the Olympics.
Phillips sustained injuries to his neck and back from a car accident earlier this year.
