Costa Rica is on course to top Group D at the World Cup, going into halftime against England level at 0-0 Tuesday.
Costa Rica's best chance came in the 23rd minute when Celso Borges' curling free kick was tipped onto the crossbar and out for a corner by England goalkeeper Ben Foster.
Costa Rica is already sure of advancing to the second round and will win the group with at least a draw. England lost its first two matches and has already been eliminated.
England fielded a second-string side that looked disjointed, giving the ball away easily and finding it difficult to break through Costa Rica's 5-3-2 setup. England's best chance came in the 12th when midfielder Jack Wilshere made a run down the left and set up Daniel Sturridge just outside the area, but the forward's curling shot went wide.
