Lakeland, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Joba Chamberlain will return to the Detroit Tigers for the 2015 season.
The right-hander joined the Tigers last year as a free agent and on Tuesday agreed to a second one-year deal with the team.
"We are pleased that Joba is returning to our ballclub," said Tigers president, CEO and general manager David Dombrowski in a statement. "He did a solid job for us last year and his addition will strengthen our bullpen."
Chamberlain was 2-5 with a 3.57 earned run average in 69 games out of the bullpen for the Tigers in 2014, but his ERA was 4.97 after the All-Star break. He struck out 59 in 63 innings and ranked second in the American League with 29 holds.
The 29-year-old veteran had spent his first seven big league seasons with the New York Yankees. He owns a career record of 25-19 with a 3.81 ERA in 329 games.
To open a spot on the 40-man roster, the Tigers designated pitcher Chad Smith for assignment.
